Dishwasher Won't Start? A Damascus Guide After Outages

Updated 10/29/2026

A dishwasher that will not start is usually waiting for something: a door that is not latched, a control lock that is on, a delay start that is counting down, or a cycle that was paused when the door opened. Each of these leaves the dishwasher looking dead while it is working as designed.

If none of them is the cause, cut the power for a minute to restart the control. Whirlpool gives that step for a dishwasher whose electronics stopped answering, and it is the usual fix after a power cut.

Before you check anything

  • If the dishwasher holds water, switch it off at its breaker or unplug it before you reach in.
  • The heating element at the bottom of the tub stays hot after a cycle: give it time to cool.
  • Do not remove the kick plate, the inner door or any cover. A home check ends at the door, the racks and the controls.

Outages in the Damascus area

The Damascus area is part of Clackamas County, which took the worst of the February 2021 ice storm. On February 14 more than 120,000 PGE customers in the county had no power, and some homes waited more than a week to get it back as ice-laden trees kept bringing lines down.

A dishwasher that loses power in the middle of a cycle does not always pick up where it stopped. Its control may wait for a command, show a flashing light, or simply ignore the buttons until it has been powered down and up again. Ready.gov advises unplugging appliances during an outage, which also spares the control the surge when the power returns.

What you can check yourself

The door latch

Press the door firmly until you hear the latch click. A lower rack put back the wrong way round, or a tall pan, can keep the door from latching, and the cycle will not begin until it does.

The control lock

A lock symbol on the panel means the buttons are locked. On most Whirlpool models holding the marked button for three seconds turns the lock off; the manual names the button for yours.

A delay start

A delay set by accident shows a countdown or a delay light instead of starting. Cancel it, and the cycle can start at once. The countdown also stops while the door is not latched.

A paused cycle

If the door was opened during a cycle, a Start or Resume light may flash. Press it and close the door within a few seconds; some models wait up to half a minute before they carry on.

Restart the control

Unplug the dishwasher, or switch off its breaker, for at least one minute. Restore the power, close the door firmly and press Start.

The power itself

Check the breaker for the dishwasher, and the switch on the wall if your kitchen has one for it. On a dishwasher plugged in under the sink, a GFCI outlet nearby may have tripped.

No lights at all

With the breaker on and still no lights, the power is not reaching the control, or the control has failed. A surge after an outage can do the second. That needs a test of the supply and the board.

Lights on, but nothing happens

Go through the latch, the lock and the delay once more. If all three are right, the dishwasher may not be reading the door as closed, or the panel may not be passing the Start command to the control. Both are repairs.

It hums, then stops

A hum with no water arriving points to the water supply valve under the sink being closed, or to the inlet valve of the dishwasher. A hum with water in the tub and nothing moving points to the wash or drain pump.

What usually fails

  • Door latch or door switch: the control never sees the door as closed.
  • Control board: dead, or no answer to the buttons, after a surge.
  • User interface or touch panel: the lights work but the buttons do not.
  • Thermal fuse on some models: it cuts the dishwasher off after overheating.
  • Water inlet valve: the dishwasher starts but no water comes in.

When to call for a repair

  • No lights with the breaker on.
  • The door latches but the dishwasher still does not start after a reset.
  • It hums and stops, with the water supply open.
  • It trips the breaker or the GFCI outlet.
  • You smell burning near the panel or the kick plate.

What a repair visit involves

  • Book online: choose the appliance, describe the problem and pick up to three times that suit you.
  • We confirm one of your times by phone or text. You are not booked until we do.
  • We come to your home, test the dishwasher and find the cause.
  • You get the price before any repair begins. We repair it with your approval; if a part has to be ordered, we come back to fit it.

The diagnostic visit costs $89. If you go ahead with the repair, the $89 is applied toward it; if you decide not to repair, the $89 covers the diagnosis.

Our work and the parts we install carry a 90-day warranty. The terms are printed on your invoice.
