Refrigerator Repair in Portland, Oregon
A refrigerator that stops cooling puts the food inside on a clock. Mend My Appliance repairs refrigerators at home across the Portland metro area: we come to you, find the cause and tell you the price before any repair begins.
We work on the whole machine, from a blocked defrost drain or a failed fan to the sealed refrigeration system: compressor, evaporator, condenser and refrigerant.
Refrigerator problems we fix
Not cooling, or not cold enough
Often a failed evaporator or condenser fan, frost that has blocked the airflow because the defrost system stopped working, a start relay or a control fault. Less often the sealed system itself.
What to check first: not cooling, or not cold enough
Water on the floor or under the crisper drawers
Usually a frozen or blocked defrost drain, a cracked drain pan or a leaking water line to the ice maker.
What to check first: water on the floor or under the crisper drawers
Ice maker not making ice, water dispenser not working
A water inlet valve that no longer opens, a frozen fill tube, a clogged filter, or the ice maker module itself.
Freezer is cold but the fresh-food section is warm
Cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the refrigerator. Frost on the evaporator, a dead fan or a stuck air damper stops it on the way.
Food freezing in the refrigerator section
A damper stuck open, a temperature sensor reading wrong, or a control that no longer cycles.
Loud humming, buzzing or clicking
A fan blade hitting ice, a worn fan motor, or a compressor that tries to start and cannot.
Frost building up in the freezer
A defrost heater, sensor or control that has failed, or a door gasket that no longer seals.

Refrigerant and sealed-system work
Opening the sealed system is a different kind of repair from changing a fan: the refrigerant has to be recovered, the system repaired, pulled into a vacuum and charged by weight. Refrigerant work on your refrigerator is done by an EPA Section 608 Certified Technician.
Not every refrigerator is worth a compressor. We tell you what the repair involves and what it costs before you decide.
Built-in refrigerators
A built-in, panel-ready or column refrigerator is repaired where it stands, in its niche, and it has faults of its own: a condenser behind the grille that clogs with dust, long door gaskets, heavy panels and their hinges.
How a refrigerator repair visit works
- Book online: choose the appliance, describe the problem and pick up to three times that suit you.
- We confirm one of your times by phone or text. You are not booked until we do.
- We come to your home, test the refrigerator and find the cause.
- You get the price before any repair begins. We repair it with your approval; if a part has to be ordered, we come back to fit it.
The diagnostic visit costs $90. If you go ahead with the repair, the $90 is applied toward it; if you decide not to repair, the $90 covers the diagnosis.
Our work and the parts we install carry a 90-day warranty. The terms are printed on your invoice.
Refrigerator brands we repair
Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Maytag, KitchenAid, Bosch, Electrolux, Sub-Zero, Viking, Miele, Monogram, Thermador, JennAir, Kenmore, Amana, GE Profile, Café, Fisher & Paykel, Dacor, Haier, Hotpoint, Bertazzoni, Smeg, Gaggenau, Liebherr, BlueStar and U-Line. If your brand is not in the list, ask: most refrigerators share their parts and their faults.
Before the visit
- Keep the doors closed as much as you can, and move anything that spoils quickly to a cooler if the temperature is rising.
- Notice whether the freezer is still cold and whether you hear the fans or the compressor. It shortens the diagnosis.
- Have the model number ready if you can find it: it is on a label inside the fresh-food section, usually on a side wall.
Where we work
We come to homes across the Portland metro area in Oregon, among them Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin and Lake Oswego. Enter your ZIP code when you book and the form checks it right away.
Repair the refrigerator or replace it?
It depends on the age of the refrigerator, the cost of the part and what a comparable new one costs. After the diagnosis you have the numbers for your machine, and the decision is yours.
