Freezer Repair in Portland, Oregon

A freezer that warms up puts everything in it at risk within a day or two. Mend My Appliance repairs upright and chest freezers at home across the Portland metro area: we find the cause and tell you the price before any repair begins.

This page is about a freezer that stands on its own. The freezer section of a refrigerator is part of that refrigerator, and it is repaired as one.

Freezer problems we fix

Not freezing, or not cold enough

A door or lid that does not seal, frost that has closed the coil of a frost-free freezer, a fan that has stopped, a start relay, a control, or the sealed system.

Frost or ice building up

On a frost-free freezer, a defrost heater, sensor or control that has failed. On any freezer, a gasket that lets room air in.

Runs all the time

A dusty condenser, a hot garage, a leaking gasket, or a system that is low on refrigerant.

Clicks and does not start

The compressor is trying to start and failing. Very often it is the start relay, a small part beside the compressor; sometimes it is the compressor.

Water on the floor

A blocked defrost drain or a cracked drain pan on a frost-free freezer; on a manual-defrost freezer, meltwater from frost that is overdue for defrosting.

Loud or new noises

A fan blade touching ice, a worn fan motor, or a compressor that has come loose on its mounts.

An alarm or a warning light

The temperature rose above the limit. Note what the display shows before you reset it.

Repairs we do

  • Start relays and overload protectors
  • Evaporator and condenser fan motors
  • Defrost heaters, sensors, timers and controls
  • Thermostats, temperature sensors and control boards
  • Door and lid gaskets, hinges and latches
  • Sealed-system work: compressor replacement, leak repair, evacuation and recharge

Types of freezers we work on

  • Upright freezers, frost-free and manual defrost
  • Chest freezers and deep freezers
  • Garage-ready freezers
  • Built-in and column freezers
  • Undercounter and drawer freezers

Compressor and sealed-system work

A freezer has the same sealed system as a refrigerator: a compressor, a condenser, an evaporator and the refrigerant between them. We replace compressors and repair leaks on freezers too. Refrigerant work is done by an EPA Section 608 Certified Technician.

On a basic chest freezer a compressor is rarely worth its price; on a built-in or column freezer it usually is. We tell you which case yours is before any work.

A freezer in the garage

Heat is the hard case. In a garage that reaches 100°F in summer a freezer runs without rest and may not hold 0°F, more so with dust on its condenser. Leave space around it and keep the coils clean. If it struggles only in the hottest weeks, the freezer may be sound and the place may be the problem.

While you wait: the food

A full freezer holds its cold for about two days if the door stays shut, a half-full one for about a day. Food that still has ice crystals, or is at 40°F or below, can be refrozen. Food that has thawed and stayed above 40°F for more than two hours should be thrown away.

The freezer of a refrigerator

When the freezer section of a refrigerator warms up, the fault and the repair belong to the refrigerator.

How a freezer repair visit works

  • Book online: choose the appliance, describe the problem and pick up to three times that suit you.
  • We confirm one of your times by phone or text. You are not booked until we do.
  • We come to your home, test the freezer and find the cause.
  • You get the price before any repair begins. We repair it with your approval; if a part has to be ordered, we come back to fit it.

The diagnostic visit costs $90. If you go ahead with the repair, the $90 is applied toward it; if you decide not to repair, the $90 covers the diagnosis.

Our work and the parts we install carry a 90-day warranty. The terms are printed on your invoice.

What appliance repair costs

Freezer brands we repair

Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Maytag, KitchenAid, Bosch, Electrolux, Sub-Zero, Viking, Miele, Monogram, Thermador, JennAir, Kenmore, Amana, GE Profile, Fisher & Paykel, Dacor, Haier, Hotpoint, Gaggenau, Liebherr and U-Line. If your brand is not in the list, ask: most freezers share their parts and their faults.

All the brands we repair

Before the visit

  • Keep the door or the lid shut: every opening lets the cold out.
  • Check that the freezer is plugged in and that the outlet works. Outlets in a garage are often on a GFCI that has tripped: press its reset button.
  • Have the model number ready: it is on a label inside the freezer, or on the back.

Where we work

We come to homes across the Portland metro area in Oregon, among them Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin and Lake Oswego. Enter your ZIP code when you book and the form checks it right away.

Repair the freezer or replace it?

It depends on the age of the freezer, the cost of the part and what a comparable new one costs. After the diagnosis you have the numbers for your machine, and the decision is yours.
