Ice Maker Repair in Portland, Oregon
No ice, small or hollow cubes, water where ice should be, an ice maker that will not stop: Mend My Appliance repairs ice makers at home across the Portland metro area, both the ice maker inside a refrigerator and the built-in machine under the counter.
Our service is residential: we repair ice makers in homes. Commercial ice machines in restaurants, bars and offices are a different trade, and we do not take them on.
Ice maker problems we fix
Not making ice
Water that does not arrive (a closed valve, a kinked line, a frozen fill tube, a clogged filter), a freezer that is not cold enough, or the ice maker module itself.
What to check first: not making ice
Small, hollow or cloudy cubes
Low water flow: a filter overdue for a change, a valve that is partly closed, or an inlet valve that has become weak. On a clear-ice machine, scale on the freezing plate.
Leaking, or a solid block of ice in the bin
An inlet valve that does not close fully, a fill tube out of place, or a cracked mold.
Will not stop, or overfills the bin
The shut-off arm or the bin sensor no longer tells the ice maker that the bin is full.
Ice tastes or smells bad
An old filter, stale ice, or food odors in the freezer. On an undercounter machine, a machine that is overdue for cleaning.
Undercounter machine runs but makes no ice
A water pump, a clogged water distributor, scale on the plate, a drain that has backed up, or the sealed system.
Dispenser does not deliver ice
A jammed auger, an auger motor that has failed, or a door flap that does not open.

The ice maker in a refrigerator
It depends on the refrigerator around it: it needs water at the inlet valve, a freezer at 0°F and, on models with the ice maker in the fresh-food door, a small cold compartment of its own. So the diagnosis starts with the refrigerator, and a warm freezer is repaired first.
Undercounter and built-in ice machines
A clear-ice machine is a small refrigeration system with a water circuit: a pump runs water over a cold plate, the ice is cut or dropped into the bin, and the meltwater drains away. It needs cleaning and descaling on a schedule, and most of its faults begin with scale or with the drain.
Commercial ice machines are outside our service
We repair residential ice makers, the ones in homes. Ice machines in restaurants, bars and offices are commercial refrigeration, with their own parts and their own rules, and we do not service them.
How an ice maker repair visit works
- Book online: choose the appliance, describe the problem and pick up to three times that suit you.
- We confirm one of your times by phone or text. You are not booked until we do.
- We come to your home, test the ice maker and find the cause.
- You get the price before any repair begins. We repair it with your approval; if a part has to be ordered, we come back to fit it.
The diagnostic visit costs $90. If you go ahead with the repair, the $90 is applied toward it; if you decide not to repair, the $90 covers the diagnosis.
Our work and the parts we install carry a 90-day warranty. The terms are printed on your invoice.
Ice maker brands we repair
Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Maytag, KitchenAid, Bosch, Electrolux, Sub-Zero, Viking, Miele, Monogram, Thermador, JennAir, Kenmore, Amana, GE Profile, Café, Fisher & Paykel, Dacor, Haier, Hotpoint, Liebherr and U-Line. If your brand is not in the list, ask: most ice makers share their parts and their faults.
Before the visit
- Check that the water valve behind the refrigerator or under the sink is fully open.
- Change the water filter if it is more than six months old.
- Make sure the ice maker is switched on: the arm down, or the switch or the setting on the display set to on.
- Note whether the freezer itself is cold: an ice maker needs about 0°F to cycle.
Where we work
We come to homes across the Portland metro area in Oregon, among them Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin and Lake Oswego. Enter your ZIP code when you book and the form checks it right away.
Repair the ice maker or replace it?
It depends on the age of the ice maker, the cost of the part and what a comparable new one costs. After the diagnosis you have the numbers for your machine, and the decision is yours.
