Dryer Repair in Portland, Oregon

A dryer that tumbles without heat, takes three cycles to dry a load or will not start at all: Mend My Appliance repairs gas and electric dryers at home across the Portland metro area.

We find the cause, tell you the price before any repair begins, and check the airflow, because a restricted vent is behind many "no heat" calls.

Dryer problems we fix

Runs but does not heat

On an electric dryer, a heating element or a blown thermal fuse; on a gas dryer, an igniter or gas valve coils. A fuse usually blows for a reason, most often a blocked vent.

What to check first: runs but does not heat

Takes too long to dry

Lint in the vent run or in the dryer itself, a moisture sensor that reads "dry" too early, or a heating element that has partly failed.

Will not start

A door switch, a thermal fuse, a start switch, a broken belt on models with a belt switch, or the motor.

Squealing, thumping or grinding

Worn drum rollers, an idler pulley, drum glides or a rear bearing. These get louder until something breaks, so they are cheaper to fix early.

Drum does not turn

A broken drive belt or a seized idler pulley.

Shuts off after a few minutes

Overheating from a blocked vent, a failing motor or a thermostat that trips too early.

Burning smell

Stop using the dryer. Lint near the heater or a failing motor can start a fire.

Gas and electric dryers

The drum, the belt and the controls are much the same; the heat is not. An electric dryer heats with an element on a 240-volt circuit, and a dryer that runs cold may simply have lost one leg of that circuit at the breaker. A gas dryer lights a burner with an igniter and holds the valve open with coils, and each of them fails in its own way.

If you smell gas, do not run the dryer. Leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.

How a dryer repair visit works

  • Book online: choose the appliance, describe the problem and pick up to three times that suit you.
  • We confirm one of your times by phone or text. You are not booked until we do.
  • We come to your home, test the dryer and find the cause.
  • You get the price before any repair begins. We repair it with your approval; if a part has to be ordered, we come back to fit it.

The diagnostic visit costs $90. If you go ahead with the repair, the $90 is applied toward it; if you decide not to repair, the $90 covers the diagnosis.

Our work and the parts we install carry a 90-day warranty. The terms are printed on your invoice.

All the brands we repair

Before the visit

  • Clean the lint screen and look at the vent hood outside: the flap should open when the dryer runs.
  • For an electric dryer that runs cold, switch the dryer breaker fully off and on once.
  • Tell us whether the dryer is gas or electric when you book.

Where we work

We come to homes across the Portland metro area in Oregon, among them Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin and Lake Oswego. Enter your ZIP code when you book and the form checks it right away.

Repair the dryer or replace it?

It depends on the age of the dryer, the cost of the part and what a comparable new one costs. After the diagnosis you have the numbers for your machine, and the decision is yours.
