Cooktop Repair in Portland, Oregon
A gas burner that clicks and never lights, an induction zone that ignores the pan, a glass top with a crack across it: Mend My Appliance repairs gas, electric and induction cooktops at home across the Portland metro area, and tells you the price before any repair begins.
This page is about the cooktop set into the counter, with no oven below it. A stove or range, burners and oven in one appliance, has a page of its own, and so does a wall oven.
Cooktop problems we fix
Gas burner will not light
Ports blocked by a boil-over, a burner cap that is not seated, a cracked igniter, or a spark module that no longer fires. If it clicks and sparks but no flame appears, the ports and the cap come first.
Igniter keeps clicking
Water in a burner switch after cleaning, a switch that has shorted, or a spark module that fires on its own.
Weak, yellow or uneven flame
Dirty ports, a cap that sits crooked, or a fault in the gas supply to the cooktop. A cooktop converted between natural gas and propane needs the orifices of that gas.
Electric element does not heat, or stays on high
A radiant or coil element that has burned out, the switch behind the knob, or on a touch-control model the control board. An element that will not turn off is a switch that has welded shut: switch the cooktop off at the breaker until it is repaired.
Induction zone does not detect the pan
First the pan: its base must be magnetic and large enough for the zone. With the right pan, the fault is in the coil, its sensor or the power board under it.
Induction cooktop shuts off, or shows an error code
An induction cooktop cools its electronics with a fan and air from under the counter. Blocked air, a failed fan or a power board that overheats shut it down. Note the code before you switch it off.
Touch controls do not respond
A control lock that is on, water or a spill on the panel, or a touch board that has failed.
Glass top is cracked
A cracked glass top is replaced, not repaired. Stop using the cooktop and switch it off at the breaker until then: liquid that runs through the crack reaches live parts.

If you smell gas
If you smell gas, do not light anything and do not touch a switch. Leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
A repair visit is for a cooktop that is safe to stand next to.
Gas, electric or induction?
A gas cooktop has grates and burners. An electric cooktop heats a coil, or an element under smooth glass that glows red. An induction cooktop is smooth glass too, but the glass stays cool where there is no pan: it heats the pan itself through a magnetic field.
To test a pan for induction, hold a fridge magnet to its base. If the magnet holds firmly, the pan works on induction. Many cooktops that seem broken after a move or a gift of new pans are working, and the pans are not.
Cooktop, stove or wall oven?
A cooktop is the burners alone, set into the counter. A stove, or range, has burners on top and an oven below. A wall oven is built into the cabinets and has no burners. Each is booked as its own appliance, so that the right parts come with the visit.
Downdraft cooktops
Some cooktops pull the smoke down through a vent between or behind the burners, instead of up into a hood. The vent has its own blower and, on a pop-up model, a motor that raises and lowers it. We repair both, together with the cooktop.
How a cooktop repair visit works
- Book online: choose the appliance, describe the problem and pick up to three times that suit you.
- We confirm one of your times by phone or text. You are not booked until we do.
- We come to your home, test the cooktop and find the cause.
- You get the price before any repair begins. We repair it with your approval; if a part has to be ordered, we come back to fit it.
The diagnostic visit costs $89. If you go ahead with the repair, the $89 is applied toward it; if you decide not to repair, the $89 covers the diagnosis.
Our work and the parts we install carry a 90-day warranty. The terms are printed on your invoice.
Cooktop brands we repair
Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Maytag, KitchenAid, Bosch, Electrolux, Wolf, Viking, Miele, Monogram, Thermador, JennAir, Kenmore, GE Profile, Café, Fisher & Paykel, Dacor, Asko, Bertazzoni, Smeg, Gaggenau and BlueStar. If your brand is not in the list, ask: most cooktops share their parts and their faults.
Before the visit
- Let a burner that was just cleaned dry for a few hours: a wet igniter clicks on its own.
- Check that each burner cap sits flat on its base.
- On an induction cooktop, try a pan that a magnet holds to, and check that the control lock is off.
- Write down any error code the display shows.
- Tell us whether the cooktop is gas, electric or induction when you book.
Where we work
We come to homes across the Portland metro area in Oregon, among them Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin and Lake Oswego. Enter your ZIP code when you book and the form checks it right away.
Repair the cooktop or replace it?
It depends on the age of the cooktop, the cost of the part and what a comparable new one costs. After the diagnosis you have the numbers for your machine, and the decision is yours.
