Built-In Refrigerator Repair in Portland, Oregon
A built-in refrigerator is part of the kitchen: fixed in its niche, dressed in cabinet panels, and far too costly to swap for a new one because a fan has failed. Mend My Appliance repairs built-in, panel-ready and column refrigerators at home across the Portland metro area.
Most of the work is done where the unit stands. When it has to come out of the niche, it comes out with the floor and the cabinets protected.
Built-in refrigerators we repair
- Built-in refrigerators with the compressor on top, behind a grille
- Integrated and panel-ready refrigerators that sit flush with the cabinets
- Column refrigerators and column freezers
- Built-in side-by-side, French door and bottom-freezer models
- Undercounter refrigerators, beverage centers and wine storage
Built-in refrigerator problems we fix
Not cooling, or warmer than it should be
On a built-in the first suspect is the condenser. It sits behind the grille at the top or the bottom, pulls in kitchen air, and clogs with dust and grease. A clogged condenser makes the compressor run hot and the refrigerator warm. After that come the fans, the defrost system and the controls.
What to check first when a refrigerator is not cooling
Door does not close or seal
Long doors carry heavy panels. Hinges sag, closers wear, and gaskets tear or go hard. A door that leaks air shows as frost, as water inside, or as a compressor that never rests.
Frost or ice in the freezer
A defrost heater or sensor that has failed, or warm air getting past the gasket.
Water on the floor or inside
A blocked defrost drain, a cracked drain pan, or the water line and valve that feed the ice maker.
Ice maker has stopped
The fill valve, a frozen fill tube, the ice maker itself or its control.
One section is warm, the other is cold
Many built-ins cool the refrigerator and the freezer with separate systems, so one can fail while the other works. Which side is warm tells us where to look.
A warning light or an error code on the display
It points to a sensor, a fan or a temperature that stayed too high. Note the code before you switch the unit off.
What is different about repairing a built-in
- Access. The machinery is behind a grille at the top or the bottom, so much of the work is done from the front without moving the unit.
- Coming out of the niche. When the unit has to move, it is unfastened from the cabinets and from its anti-tip bracket, the water line is shut and freed, and the floor is protected before it rolls.
- Panels. Custom door panels come off and go back on in line with the cabinets around them.
- Ventilation. A built-in breathes through its grille. A blocked grille opening causes the same trouble as a dirty condenser.
- Parts. Parts for built-in models are ordered by model and serial number and often take days to arrive, so a second visit is common.
Compressor and sealed-system work
A built-in is worth a sealed-system repair far more often than a freestanding refrigerator, because replacing it means a new unit of the same size, new panels and often cabinet work. We replace compressors, evaporators and filter-driers on built-in models and repair refrigerant leaks. Refrigerant work is done by an EPA Section 608 Certified Technician.

Mend My Appliance is an independent appliance repair company and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the manufacturers of the appliances we repair. Their names belong to their owners. We do not do warranty repairs on a manufacturer's behalf: if your appliance is still under its maker's warranty, call the maker first.
Looking after a built-in refrigerator
- Have the condenser cleaned once or twice a year, more often with pets in the house.
- Keep the grille clear: nothing stored against it.
- Wipe the door gaskets and look for tears or flat spots.
- Change the water filter on schedule: a clogged one starves the ice maker.
How a built-in refrigerator repair visit works
- Book online: choose the appliance, describe the problem and pick up to three times that suit you.
- We confirm one of your times by phone or text. You are not booked until we do.
- We come to your home, test the refrigerator and find the cause.
- You get the price before any repair begins. We repair it with your approval; if a part has to be ordered, we come back to fit it.
The diagnostic visit costs $90. If you go ahead with the repair, the $90 is applied toward it; if you decide not to repair, the $90 covers the diagnosis.
Our work and the parts we install carry a 90-day warranty. The terms are printed on your invoice.
Before the visit
- Find the model and serial number: on most built-ins the plate is inside the refrigerator section, near the top or along the hinge side.
- Note what the display shows and which section is warm.
- Keep the doors closed, and move what spoils quickly to a cooler if the temperature is rising.
- Tell us when you book whether the doors carry custom panels.
Where we work
We come to homes across the Portland metro area in Oregon, among them Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin and Lake Oswego. Enter your ZIP code when you book and the form checks it right away.
Repair a built-in refrigerator or replace it?
A built-in is made to be repaired. The replacement has to match the opening, the panels and the cabinets, and it costs many times what most repairs do. After the diagnosis you have the numbers for your unit, and the decision is yours.
