Dryer Making Noise in Troutdale? Thumps, Squeals and the Wind

Updated 10/28/2026

Most dryer noises point to their cause. A thump that fades once the dryer warms up is a drum roller with a flat spot. A rattle is usually something loose in the drum or in the lint screen housing. A squeal is the belt or a pulley. A grinding growl is a worn glide or bearing.

In Troutdale, listen for one more: a tapping or banging that comes in gusts, even when the dryer is off. That is often the flap of the vent hood on the outside wall, moving in the east wind.

Before you check anything

  • Unplug the dryer, or switch off its breaker, before you reach into the drum or the lint screen housing.
  • Do not remove the back panel, the top or the front of the dryer. A home check ends at the drum, the lint screen and the vent hood outside.
  • Stop using the dryer if you hear metal scraping on metal, or smell burning.

The vent flap and the east wind in Troutdale

Troutdale sits at the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge. Several times a winter, cold air from east of the Cascades pours through the Gorge toward the coast, and the National Weather Service warns of gusts of 40 to 55 mph near Troutdale and in the east of Multnomah County.

A dryer vent ends at a hood on the outside wall, and building codes require that hood to have a backdraft damper: a flap or a set of louvers that the dryer's air pushes open and that falls shut when the dryer stops, to keep out cold air and animals. In a strong wind the flap can lift and drop over and over, and the sound travels down the duct into the laundry room.

Go outside and watch the hood while the wind blows. A flap that taps is a nuisance; one that stays stuck open lets cold air into the duct, and one packed with lint stays half shut and slows drying. The U.S. Fire Administration advises checking that the outdoor flap opens while the dryer runs and that nothing blocks it.

What you can check yourself

Pockets and the drum

Coins, keys, pens and buttons rattle loudly in a metal drum. Empty pockets before every load, and run a hand around the inside of the drum for anything caught in the seams.

The lint screen housing

Pull out the lint screen and look into the slot with a flashlight. A coin or a sock that fell in there can strike the blower wheel. Clear it with a dryer lint brush, never with your fingers deep in the slot.

Level and legs

A dryer that rocks on three feet knocks. Check that all four feet touch the floor and that it does not move when you press on a corner.

Things on and around it

Bottles on top of the dryer, a broom leaning on its side, a full pedestal drawer: each one rattles. Leave a gap between the washer and the dryer, so the spinning washer does not shake it.

Bulky loads and shoes

Sheets and blankets roll into a ball that thumps as it tumbles, and sneakers bang. Load bulky items loosely, and dry shoes on a rack.

Listen after it warms up

Drum rollers can flatten where they rest while the dryer stands unused, and thump for the first minutes of a cycle. If the thump fades as the dryer warms, that is what it was. If it does not, the rollers are worn.

The vent hood outside

The flap should open freely while the dryer runs and close when it stops. Clear lint from it, and never fit a screen over the opening: screens collect lint, and the code does not allow them.

Thumping

A rhythmic thump with every turn of the drum is a roller with a flat spot, a ball of laundry, or a shoe. One that stays after the dryer is warm and the load is loose means worn drum rollers or a worn rear bearing.

Squealing or squeaking

Squealing comes from the belt and the pulleys. Lint packed inside the dryer makes them squeal sooner, and as a dryer ages the belt and the idler pulley wear. Both are behind the panels, so this is a repair visit.

Rattling or knocking

Rattles are almost always something loose: in a pocket, in the lint housing, on top of the dryer, or a foot that does not touch the floor. Knocking in gusts with the dryer off is the vent flap.

Grinding or a low roar

A scraping or grinding sound means metal is touching where it should slide: worn drum glides or a failed felt seal at the front, or a worn bearing at the back. A roar from the back can also be the blower wheel, loose or rubbing. Stop using the dryer: worn glides can scratch the drum.

What usually fails

  • Drum support rollers: thumping that stays once the dryer is warm.
  • Idler pulley: a squeal, then a screech as the bearing inside it fails.
  • Drive belt: worn or glazed, it squeals and slips; broken, the drum stops.
  • Drum glides and felt seal: scraping at the front of the drum.
  • Rear drum bearing: a grinding growl from the back.
  • Blower wheel: a rattle or a roar from the lower front, often after a sock got into it.

When to call for a repair

  • A squeal or a grind that does not go away.
  • Thumping that stays after the dryer is warm and the load is loose.
  • Metal scraping, or the drum stops turning.
  • A noise together with a burning smell, or a dryer that shuts off mid-cycle.
  • The noise came with drying that takes longer than it did.
