Refrigerator in a Cold Garage in Fairview: Why the Freezer Thaws

Updated 10/28/2026

A regular refrigerator in a cold garage often lets its freezer thaw while the fresh food section stays cold. Most refrigerators decide when to run by the temperature of the fresh food section. When the garage itself is cold, that section rarely asks for cooling, the compressor stays off, and the freezer slowly warms.

GE does not recommend a refrigerator that is not built for the garage anywhere it will be colder than 60°F. The fixes are a garage-ready model, a Garage Mode if yours has one, or bringing the refrigerator inside for the winter.

Before you check anything

  • Unplug the refrigerator, or switch off its breaker, before you move it or reach behind it.
  • Do not remove any panel or cover, and do not put a heater or a lamp next to the refrigerator to warm it.
  • Check the food in the freezer with a thermometer: frozen food that still has ice crystals, or is at 40°F or below, can be refrozen.

Fairview winters and the east wind

Fairview lies at the east end of the Portland metro, close to the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge. Several times each winter cold east wind blows out of the Gorge, and the National Weather Service warns of gusts of 40 to 55 mph near Troutdale and in the east of Multnomah County, with cold nights behind the wind.

An unheated garage follows the outdoor air, and a garage wall that faces the wind cools fastest. In the weeks the east wind blows, a garage can fall below the range a regular refrigerator is built for, and a garage-ready one can reach the bottom of its own.

What you can check yourself

The rating of your model

The manual or the specification gives the room temperatures the refrigerator is built for. GE's garage-ready models are rated from 38°F to 110°F. On Whirlpool models with a Garage Mode, the normal setting is for 55°F to 110°F and Garage Mode for a garage that stays between 38°F and 55°F; Whirlpool notes that ranges vary by model.

A thermometer in the freezer

The freezer should read 0°F or below. A thermometer for a week tells you whether it holds that in the cold spells or only in mild weather.

Garage Mode

If your refrigerator has a Garage Mode on its temperature control, use it while the garage stays cold, and switch back to the normal setting when the weather warms, as Whirlpool advises.

Settings on a GE garage-ready model

For a garage between 38°F and 54°F, GE advises setting the refrigerator control to 2, so food does not freeze, and the freezer control to 5, so food does not thaw.

Where it stands

Keep the refrigerator away from the garage door and the coldest outside wall, with the space around it the manual asks for, so it is not standing in a draft.

Summer is the other end

A garage that passes 110°F in a heat wave is too hot for any refrigerator. Keep the condenser coils free of dust so it can give off heat in summer.

The freezer thaws, the fresh food side is fine

This is the cold-garage pattern, and nothing has to be broken. The control is doing what it was built to do: it sees a cold fresh food section and leaves the compressor off. Move the refrigerator inside, use Garage Mode, or replace it with a garage-ready model.

Food freezing in the fresh food section

When the garage drops toward freezing, the fresh food section can follow it. On a garage-ready GE model, the lower refrigerator setting GE gives for cold weather prevents it. On a regular refrigerator it is one more sign the garage is too cold for it.

A separate freezer in the garage

A chest or upright freezer measures its own temperature, so a cold garage does not trick it the same way. Many are sold as garage ready; check the rating of yours before winter.

What usually fails

  • In a cold garage, often nothing: the control works as designed.
  • Defrost heater or sensor: frost or ice on the back wall of the freezer, in any weather.
  • Evaporator fan motor: the freezer is cold and the fresh food side is warm.
  • Temperature control or sensor: both sections warm in a mild garage.
  • Start relay: a click every few minutes, and nothing cools.

When to call for a repair

  • The freezer stays warm while the garage is inside the range the manual gives.
  • Frost or ice builds up on the back wall of the freezer.
  • Both sections are warm.
  • It clicks every few minutes.
  • It trips the breaker or smells of burning.
