Refrigerator Leaking Water? What to Check in Gresham
Updated 10/29/2026
Where the water is tells you the cause. Water or ice inside, under the crisper drawers or on the freezer floor, almost always means a clogged defrost drain. Water on the floor, with nothing inside, points to the water supply: the line, the valve, the filter housing or the ice maker fill.
A refrigerator without a water line can still leak, but only from the defrost system. GE lists the clogged drain as the most common cause of water under the vegetable pans.
Before you check anything
- Unplug the refrigerator, or switch off its breaker, before you move it or clean up water around it.
- If water is spreading on the floor, close the supply valve to the refrigerator: follow the line to the shutoff, often under the kitchen sink.
- Do not remove the back panel or the cover inside the freezer to reach the drain on models where it is hidden: that is a repair.
Gresham's water and the water line
Gresham now serves groundwater from the Cascade well field, shared with Rockwood Water People's Utility District, instead of Bull Run water as its main source. The city describes it as moderately hard, 58 to 108 milligrams per liter, with more calcium, magnesium and silica.
Harder water leaves more mineral behind where water stands or drips: on the screen of the water inlet valve, around the filter housing, in the ice maker fill cup. Scale there can keep a valve from closing fully, and a valve that seeps or a fill cup that overflows puts water where it should not be. A water filter changed on time matters more now than it did on Bull Run water.
What you can check yourself
Inside or outside
Dry everything, then look in a few hours. Water under the crisper drawers or ice on the freezer floor is the defrost drain. Water only on the floor is the supply side or the drain pan.
The defrost drain on a side-by-side
On some GE side-by-side models you can flush the drain yourself: GE describes clearing the drain hole at the back of the freezer with warm water and baking soda from a turkey baster. On top- and bottom-freezer models the drain is usually behind panels, and GE advises a service call.
The water line and valve
With the refrigerator pulled out and unplugged, look at the line where it connects at the back and at the valve. A loose fitting or a split plastic line shows as drips or a wet spot.
The water filter
A filter that is not locked in fully, or an old one with a cracked housing, leaks inside the compartment or at the base grille. Reseat it, or replace it if it is past its date.
The ice maker
Water dripping from the ice maker, or ice frozen on the bin, points to the fill tube, the fill cup or the valve feeding it.
Level
A refrigerator tilted forward can let condensation and drain water run where they should not. It should be level side to side, and many manufacturers want the front a little higher than the back so the doors close by themselves.
Ice on the freezer floor
On a side-by-side, ice under the bottom freezer basket is the classic sign of a frozen or clogged defrost drain. GE suggests flushing the drain once or twice a year with warm baking soda water to keep it clear.
Water under the crisper drawers
On a top-freezer refrigerator, water under the vegetable pans is the most common evidence of a clogged drain tube, according to GE.
Water only on the floor
Check the supply line and the valve first, then the drain pan under the refrigerator, which can crack or sit out of place after the refrigerator is moved.
What usually fails
- Defrost drain: clogged with debris or frozen shut, often because of a defrost fault.
- Water inlet valve: cracked, or scaled so it does not close fully.
- Supply line: loose at a fitting, or a plastic line that split.
- Filter housing: cracked, or a filter that does not seal.
- Drain pan: cracked or out of place.
When to call for a repair
- Water keeps returning inside after the drain was flushed.
- The drain is behind panels on your model.
- The valve or the filter housing drips.
- Ice builds up on the back wall of the freezer.
- Water near the controls or the compressor area.
