Dryer Smells Like Burning? What to Do in Beaverton

Updated 10/29/2026

Stop the dryer and take the load out if the smell is strong, if you see smoke, or if the clothes are hotter than usual. Then find the cause before you run it again.

A new dryer smells oily or burnt for its first runs while manufacturing residue burns off; GE and Whirlpool both call that normal. On a dryer that has been in use, a burning smell most often comes from lint: on the heater, in the cabinet, or in a vent that no longer carries the hot air outside.

Before you check anything

  • If you smell gas, do not light anything and do not touch a switch. Leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
  • If you see smoke or flame, leave the room, close the door if you can and call 911.
  • Unplug the dryer, or switch off its breakers, before you check the lint screen housing or move it to reach the vent.
  • Do not run the dryer while you are asleep or away from home, as the fire service advises.
  • Do not remove the back panel or the top to look for lint inside. That part of the cleaning is a service job.

Beaverton and dryer fires

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue is the fire district that serves Beaverton. Its communications officer has called dryer fires very common and frequently preventable, and the district’s advice has been plain: clean the lint trap and the area around the dryer after every load, never run a dryer while away or asleep, and treat clothes that take much longer to dry or come out hotter than usual as a sign of a blocked vent.

The U.S. Fire Administration finds failure to clean the leading cause of dryer fires, and adds that a large share of lint never reaches the trap: it collects inside the dryer, even on the heating element.

What you can check yourself

Is the dryer new

For the first few cycles a new dryer can smell oily or burnt. GE suggests running it empty for about twenty minutes, Whirlpool about fifteen, with the room aired. The smell should not return after that.

The lint screen

Clean the screen before every load. Dryer sheets leave a film on the mesh that blocks air even when it looks clean; wash the screen with warm soapy water and a soft brush now and then.

The lint screen housing

With the dryer unplugged, look into the slot the screen slides into with a flashlight. Lint packed there, or a sock that fell in, sits close to hot air.

The vent

Run the dryer and check outside that the vent flap opens and air pushes out strongly. A weak flow means lint or a crushed duct. Plastic or foil ducts should be replaced with metal duct.

What went in the load

Clothes stained with cooking oil, gasoline, solvents or spot remover give off vapors that can ignite; wash them well and air dry them. Foam, rubber and plastic items do not belong in a hot dryer.

Paint and solvents in the room

A dryer draws room air through the load. Fresh paint, stain or varnish nearby can make the laundry and the dryer smell, and that smell is not the dryer burning.

A new dryer that smells hot

Expected for the first runs, as manufacturing oils and dust on the heater burn off. A smell that lasts beyond a few cycles is not break-in and needs a look.

A sharp electrical smell

A smell of hot plastic or wiring, rather than of scorched lint, points to the cord, the terminal block where it connects, the motor or the controls. Leave the dryer off and unplugged until it has been checked.

A gas dryer that smells of gas

A gas smell is not a dryer repair question first. Follow the gas rule above, then have the dryer and its connection checked.

What usually fails

  • Lint inside the cabinet, around the burner or the heating element: the most common cause.
  • A blocked or crushed vent: the dryer overheats and the safety thermostats trip.
  • Drive belt slipping on a seized pulley: a burnt rubber smell.
  • Drive motor overheating: a hot electrical smell, often with the drum slowing.
  • Cord, terminal block or wiring: scorch marks and a smell at the back.

When to call for a repair

  • Any smoke, or a smell that comes back after the lint screen and the vent are clean.
  • Scorch marks on the cord, the plug or the outlet.
  • Clothes much hotter than usual, or drying taking much longer.
  • A burnt rubber smell with a squeal.
  • The dryer shuts off partway through the cycle.
