Sub-Zero Not Cooling? What to Check in Lake Oswego
Updated 10/29/2026
When a Sub-Zero runs warm, start with the condenser. It sits behind the grille, and when it is matted with dust the unit cannot shed its heat. Sub-Zero asks owners to clean it regularly, every six to twelve months on most current models.
Sub-Zero also gives a useful line: if the refrigerator section is far above its setting, above 48°F when set at 38°F, a cleaning is unlikely to bring it back, and the unit needs a repair.
Before you check anything
- Turn the unit off at its control panel, or switch off its breaker, before you clean the condenser.
- Wear gloves: condenser fins are sharp.
- Do not remove the panels around the unit or the cover of the machine compartment. A home check ends at the grille, the condenser and the door.
- Move food that spoils quickly to a cooler with ice if the refrigerator is above 40°F.
Lake Oswego and long outages
Most of Lake Oswego lies in Clackamas County, which took the worst of the February 2021 ice storm: more than 120,000 PGE customers in the county had no power on February 14, and some homes waited more than a week.
A built-in refrigerator recovers slowly after an outage like that. Sub-Zero notes that after a condenser cleaning it can take up to 24 hours for temperatures to return to normal, and the same patience applies after the power comes back. A Sub-Zero that is still warm a full day after an outage, with a clean condenser and a closed door, has a fault.
What you can check yourself
The condenser
Behind the grille at the top or the kick plate at the bottom, depending on the model. With the unit off, vacuum it with a soft brush, moving along the fins. Sub-Zero says chemical degreasers are not needed and not recommended.
The door and the gasket
A built-in door is heavy and can stop just short of closed. Check that it closes fully, that nothing on a shelf holds it, and that the gasket is clean and not torn.
The settings and the power
Confirm the set temperatures on the control and that the unit has not been switched off there. Sub-Zero notes that lights on with no cooling can mean the refrigerator has been disabled at its control.
Warm food and open doors
A large load of groceries or a long-open door raises the temperature for several hours. Give it that time before you judge.
The service indicator
Many Sub-Zero controls show a service light or a code, and some flash a reminder when the condenser needs cleaning. Note what the display shows before you turn anything off.
Air around the grille
A built-in unit breathes through its grille. Anything stacked against it, or a toe kick blocked by a rug, starves the condenser of air.
Refrigerator warm, freezer cold
Many Sub-Zero models cool each section with its own system, so one warm section points to that section: its fan, its evaporator, its defrost system or its sealed system.
Both sections warm
After the condenser and the door are ruled out, both sections warm points to the condenser fan, the compressor or the sealed system. On a Sub-Zero that is a repair worth diagnosing: these units are built to be repaired.
Still warm after cleaning
Give it 24 hours. If the refrigerator section was above 48°F before the cleaning and is still high a day later, the cleaning was not the answer.
What usually fails
- Condenser fan motor: the compressor runs hot and the unit warms, most in summer.
- Evaporator fan motor: one section warm, the other cold.
- Defrost heater, sensor or control: frost closes the evaporator.
- Temperature sensor or control board: the unit does not call for cooling.
- Sealed system: compressor, refrigerant leak or restriction, with everything running and no cold.
When to call for a repair
- The refrigerator section is above 48°F with the setting at 38°F.
- Still warm 24 hours after a condenser cleaning.
- A service light or a code on the display.
- Frost on the back wall of the freezer.
- The compressor clicks on and off without cooling.
What a repair visit involves
- Book online: choose the appliance, describe the problem and pick up to three times that suit you.
- We confirm one of your times by phone or text. You are not booked until we do.
- We come to your home, test the refrigerator and find the cause.
